José del Avellanal Carreño (*1998) is a Spanish composer and performer working at the crossroads of contemporary music, multimedia art and experimental music theatre. His work is characterised by a strong interest in the visual and conceptual dimensions of the musical performance, often centred around themes such as musical narrative, imperfect technologies, failed attempts at communication, the encounter between human and machine, the translation and integration of cinematic influences, and the manipulation and recontextualisation of preexisting media.
His music, including instrumental, electronic, multimedia, and theatrical works, has been showcased in festivals such as impuls (AT), Rümlingen (CH), Resis (ES), Foresty (IT) and SONIC MATTER (CH); and performed by, amongst others, JACK Quartet, Vertixe Sonora, Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Ex-Sentia Ensemble, Spectra Ensemble, Ensemble Shockwave and Levy Lorenzo. He was awarded the Music Prize of WE:NOW Festival in Madrid (ES, 2022) and was selected for the artistic residencies "Bijloke Summer Academy – Music Theatre“ in Ghent (BE, 2025). As a performer his main focus is in contemporary vocal performance, and has been involved in the premiere of works by Éliane Radigue, Severin Dornier, Jiwon Seo, Ali Latif Shushtari, BUREAU BUREAU and himself.
José is currently based in Berlin, where he works as a freelance composer, performer and technical assistant in creative projects. He is a graduate of the Master in Composition Creative Practice at the Hochschule der Künste Bern (CH), studying with Simon Steen-Andersen and Franziska Baumann, and he previously studied composition at the Royal Northern College of Music (UK) with Emily Howard and Steven Daverson, graduating with first-class honours.
